Island Weather!

Did you know that the U.S. and British Virgin Islands are only about a 1000 miles from the equator? Yes! Pack sunscreen, the sun is much stronger here! In the islands, we enjoy a balmy subtropical climate and cooling trade winds. Temperatures rarely drop below 77°F in the winter or rise above 90°F in the summer. Even on a really warm day, if you are in the shade, you are comfortable because of the constant breezes. The night temperatures vary by only 10 degrees. Hurricane season runs from July 1st through the end of November. They typically occur in our area from late August to late September. The good news is that Three Moons is not available for charter during most of hurricane season... we don't want to endanger our guests or our home. Ah! The voice of experience!

Winter... While most everyone else is freezing in the icy tundra of the US Mainland and most of Europe, we are enjoying beautiful sunshine and great wind for sailing. Daytime temperatures average 80-85°F and drop to 75-80°F at night. Winds average 10-20 knots giving us cool nights. You may want a light blanket if you keep your hatch open in your cabin at night. It is common to see short rain showers during the day and at night too. We call 'em, "Liquid Sunshine or Moon Showers"!! They pass over quickly and rarely last more than 30 minutes.

For all you snowbirds: Christmas and New Years are the busiest weeks of the season. There will be lots of people, but it is still fairly easy to find a quiet spot to yourself. And who knows? You may make a new friend!

Spring and Fall... With the arrival of spring, the islands put on a new coat of fresh, green lushness. Even though our seasons are not as marked as the seasons at home, one can still feel it in the air. Daytime highs average 90°F, nighttime lows 80°F, and there is a 20% chance of a passing shower. The only difference between spring and fall is that we are likely to have a few more rain showers. April and May typically are a little slower months for chartering and can be an excellent time to visit. It's much easier to find your own piece of paradise during these months that isn't being used by anyone else!

Summer... Personally, we think that the arrival of Carnival in St. Thomas heralds the beginning of summer. And as they say, it is "HOT, HOT, HOT"!!! In June and July, the daytime temperatures push 95°F. Fortunately, the nights are fairly comfortable at 80°F. We prefer to crank up the air-conditioning throughout the yacht after a day of sun and fun.
